Whatman AIEC and column chromatography products are developed for a variety of applications, including ion exchange chromatography of proteins, nucleic acids, hormones, peptides, antibodies and other biological compounds. DEAE (diethylaminoethyl) and ether-linked CM (carboxymethyl) are the functional groups most commonly used. Orthophosphate bifunctional cation exchanger is used for separation of medium molecular weight molecules.

Pre-swollen microgranular AIEC provides high load capacity, fast kinetics and excellent resolution. It saves time by eliminating the need for precycling prior to buffer equilibration. Dry microgranular AIEC has similar performance characteristics as pre-swollen AIEC after precycling; reduces the possibility of bacterial growth. Fibrous AIEC supports maximum throughput at high flow rates.
