Half-cell electrodes use a solid membrane of silver chloride, which is an ionic conductor for silver. They require no renewal or coating. The silver ion develops a potential across the membrane that depends on chloride ion activity in the sample solution. Electrodes can also be used as sensitive titration end point indicators.
