Fan goggles are dramatically better that traditional goggles at fog resistance, but in the most extreme fog-prone environments, it is important to use the fan preventatively. Users should activate the fan on slow speed before they begin to saturate the moisture content inside the goggles. The anti-fog lens coating is hydrophilic: it absorbs moisture to help prevent fogging, but once it has absorbed its fill of moisture, it can take time to dry the coating out (even with the fan on) without removing the goggles and letting the lens dry out. So the natural tendency for users to turn the fan on only after the goggle begins to fog is not optimal. If the fan is run on low speed well before the lens would fog, it will keep the coating from having to soak up the moisture by evacuating it. By keeping the coating dry preventatively you can essentially guarantee the lens won’t fog up.

For best results with any goggles, users should also replace the ESS Profile TurboFan Goggle Lenses and ESS Striker Turbofan Lenses on the every six to nine months to get “fresh” anti-fog (AF) coatings. Alternatively, users can use ESS Reusable ClearZone No-Fog Cloths (25 Pack) ESSFOG245 or apply an aftermarket AF solution like McNett Op Drops, which are effective, but not as lasting as the factory coatings. Mild soap and water are best for cleaning dirty lenses, and it’s best not to wipe hard on the inside lens surface when it is wet because you can wipe the coatings off. Users should never use Windex or other ammonia-based lens cleansers, because they destroy the AF coatings and also chemically change the lenses so they lose impact resistance.
